Travel Day to Boondock

Travel Day to Boondock

Wednesday October 4, 2023

We got moving this morning early and left the
KOA at 9ish, in Springfield Illinois.
There is a KOA sign coming out, when your going in the right direction. Another long dirt road to leave.
In our travels we've noticed it's been so flat, but the terrain was changing a little bit today.
We had a wonderful drive today. Very minimal traffic, was cloudy to start, but the sun did come out later in the day.
We did make two fuel stops. It was such an easy drive, I even listened to a no BS live Zoom call, while driving.

Then I had to search for someone who lives in Florida, that could receive my package before we go to the Florida Keys. The fourth person I asked was able to do it, as they were not leaving their home in Florida, during the time frame my package should arrive. Thank you Tina and John.

Today we were in three states Illinois, Missouri, and finally to Kansas.
Jim had booked our first Winery for Harvest Host. It is called Twisted Vine Winery in Lawrence Kansas. We got set up and put all the slides out, and got the generator going. We talked about how long, if ever it has been since we put all the slides out when boondocking.
Then we went in to the winery and saw a small flock of free range sheep as we went in.
Then we spent way more money than I wanted to.
Really cool inside, with a huge event space. This is the outside, which doesn't read like a winery.
Jim had a flight of wine, some Fireball called hot Apple pie, wine. We bought a sub for tomorrow's travel lunch to share,  although it was pretty sad looking. Also a little gift for someone,  1 stuffed chocolate chip cookie, delicious watermelon slushy and they had free samples of their soap they make.
I asked if another RV was coming in tonight, she said there was one. But they called and said they'd be late.
Here's our receipt for the money we spent there.
I told Jim we could have had a nice site with full hookups for that price, lol.
There was a KOA just up the road.
He said I don't want to talk about that anymore.
All my cleaning I did yesterday, and we were very dusty and dirty again after pulling in ( another dirt road) and it was quite Breezy here.
Then we came home I heated up dinner for us and we watched survivor.

Then we mentioned about the people who were still supposed to come in, Jim said I didn't think they'd be here this late. By now it was after 9:30 p.m... and just as I got up to look out and make my decaf coffee after dinner, although it was a little late for it. I saw the fifth wheel coming in. I put on our scare lights to light the way in, put on a coat and grabbed my coffee and went outside.
I welcomed them to the area they came from Colorado today. WOW, We had a nice chat with April and Barry,  Jim came out too then, they are new full-timers. April offered Jim a brownie. We chatted a bit, they said they were leaving about 8 am tomorrow, heading to Tennessee. They were super nice to chat with although it was quick. Wish they would have been here earlier we could have hung out with them inside the winery. Would have been a lot of fun.

Supposed to get a lot chillier tonight. Jim turned the generator off right before 10 p.m..

Thursday October 5, 2023

I woke up early this am. The battery was at 63 % Jim got up and got the generator running. As soon as he came in, we saw April and Barry pulling out way before 8:00 a.m.  I opened the door and waved goodbye to her. Wishing them safe travels, wish they would have stayed longer.
Once the generator was running we got the coffee pot on. Then we put the awning in. Relaxed with coffee, as we planned our day.
It was a nice short travel day, we only had an hour and a half drive, about 80 miles, to our next Boondockers Welcome spot at a private home.
Jim updated the Garmin RV and it changed the route we would have arrived differently last night. Still dirt road though.
It was a beautiful day, it was about 78 degrees. Cold fronts coming.
We arrived at our location for the night a Boondockers Welcome, in Manhattan Kansas. We assumed we were to park in front of his garage building.
We pulled over and there was a dirt road that followed. Another dirt road, WE can't get away from dirt roads.  Then all of a sudden a garbage truck went by, and a couple other cars,  we had to scooch over for.
Quite Dusty when the cars would fly by. We went and knocked on the door and he wasn't home.
There was a visiting nurse here with his wife. So we drove down to the above spot, and started to back in. They had told him, we had arrived and shortly after he came down and introduced himself.

There was quite a lot of vehicles and a small red trailer sorted in the way. Per his suggestion, he helped Jim manually move the trailer out of the way for us. We were able to plug into 30 amp. Such a game changer.
Jim loved this Ford Fairlane 500 he had.
We relaxed for the rest of the day and didn't go anywhere, it was just kind of nice hanging out. Later we had dinner and enjoyed the perfect weather where you don't need heat or AC.
He had someone helping him cut the grass and seed the lawn and water sprinklers came on, so that was a little noisy but all's good.
