Food Bank, and Lunch, Tube River Float, Texas Party

Food Bank, and Lunch, Tube River Float. Texas Party

Friday April 29, 2022

This a.m. Jim was awake at 5 a.m. and in the shower. We got ready for our first trip of the day was the food bank. Texas is #2 State for food insecurity.
Todd made a great speech to their staff about our group and what all we stand for.

They separated us into groups based on what skills we wanted to use. There was about 35 went to the warehouse packing and lifting heavy. A group went out to the Garden to mulch and weed. Another group was picking fresh produce from the garden. And
I was in the kitchen group with Chef John and Chef Art.
First they got a group that was going to clean unfortunately with bleach. So I walked down to the chef Art he had two of our people chopping sausage. I asked him what I could do to help, cuz I'm allergic to the smell of bleach and get a headache. So he had me help him make a Cajun roux for gumbo. He added the oil as I stirred in the flour and make sure it didn't burn. Kim was down there with me and she added  60 lb of lean  turkey burger to the soup pot.. And STIRRED.  Once It was no longer pink she added onions and peppers. Later they were going to add the rest of the ingredients for 360 servings.

Here are pictures of the garden, above
the warehouse, with Jim. They were finished, the guy was thanking everyone. Jim was so sweaty.
Inside warehouse

Later they served us lunch you had a choice of ham sandwich a turkey wrap or roast beef with a cookie, chips and fruit cup. Extra sweet tea since we're in Texas no thanks stuck  to water. They were selling food bank t-shirts for us to purchase. We made a donation to the food bank. They gave us all the stats of how much food we package. I hopefully to get those numbers later. It was huge for them, they never had such a large group volunteer together at one time.

We drove our truck over with Eric and Anne.  we had met in Florida. He was the one looking for a cricket they loved ours. He actually found one here he's going to be purchasing.  love it when things work out.   We picked them up and we drove to where we were going to tube in the river I didn't start until 2 so we have plenty of time to change get situated. Sign waivers in case we disappeared in the Texas river never to be seen again.
It was a lot of fun we almost backed out I was afraid it was going to be cold but it was perfect. There was three chutes you had to go through, the first being the worst, so we walked around. So the first chute we actually went through was fine but Jim got dumped over and his head was all wet. Luckily his phone case kept his phone dry.
Then the 3rd Chute we both did well nice relaxing float. There was some party people stuck amongst our group a bridal party and a whole bunch of guys whooping it up  they each had a bottle. They were drinking their wacky juice.

When it was time to exit the water two and a half hours later, went so fast. A few Guys in our group were helping people exit.
First they helped me get out semi gracefully. And then Jim stepped on the Slippery Rock and went down all the way under again, great test for the phone case. He said it's really deep there. We walked out we had a ride to and from the water where we had to sign the waivers. When we went back to get on the bus and they were working on it cuz it wasn't running. Sounds familiar. We got on the smaller bus as we pulled out we heard the other one running, although it didn't sound that great.

We got back to the RV took showers had a quick snack through the wet  clothes in the washer and the dryer and then we went down for our Texas Barbecue Party.
We got to have a great barbecue and sausage, brisket and pork, potato salad cream corn, all the fixings and peach cobbler for dessert.

The guy in the Hat give Todd a Woody costume to put on, hence the Western theme and Todd does love his costumes. Someone donated the blue boy in the picture also they gave that away .
Then they had country music playing Megan taught everyone a line dance called the switch it up Shuffle. She's a ballet dancer, she made the dance a lot harder than I thought she would for newbies. We practiced it for a while made for a very funny evening. Jim is feeling pretty good tonight so we actually got to do a few line dances.  Dellynn from Our Not So Perfect Life,  offered to drive people up in her golf cart. Jim and Eric went first. Ann Nettles and I stayed and chatted a bit longer.
Then she took us back to our RV'S. She almost killed us on a a speed bump She didn't see. We sat outside a bit with Ann and Dixie her dog. Was a beautiful evening about 8:30 by now.
What a GREAT day. Jim was in bed pretty early.

Feeding the Crew, As More Rolled in, Helping set Up

Wednesday April 27, 2022

Jim was up extra early this morning as he was going to go to breakfast with Shawn and Ronda. He took a shower and was ready waiting for pick up at 9. They never came. Found out later he left him a fb message, but Jim never saw it. Ronda didn't feel well this morning. To much partying last night. I bet. I figured that something like that happened.
I made him sausage and eggs for breakfast. I made a batch of steel cut oatmeal in the Instant pot Then had my breakfast too.
We drove down to the County Store, saw pool.
Then we played mini golf. I won, but almost pulled a Flyers, almost lost, had a 5 stroke lead, but still won by one stroke. I think that I said that right, don't know golf terms. Should ask Travis he loves it, well NOT mini golf.
Then we went back to RV I sliced the rest of the pork. And we had sandwiches for lunch too.
We sat out and I put more on fb and offered more pork if anyone else was hungry.

We went for a little walk, said Hi to Todd and Sheila. They are having more solar power put in. And they had a leak in the under belly,  have wet insulation still not sure where water came from. Best guess, was from the heavy rain we both drove through on the day we both arrived.

We did see someone else who has a Cricket golf cart too. Really ticks us, but he won't take it out now. That's OK.

We watched people roll in some we know some we don't YET. Saw Cheese and Nancy Desrochers, Billy and Cindy Smith,  more YouTubers Jason and Dellynn,  From Our Not So Perfect Life. We finally met our neighbors behind us. We fed Billy and Cindy and some people we met walking from Oklahoma have alot more names to learn.
Then Billy and Cindy gave us a ride down where they set up the tent for us.
We went to help set up tables and chairs.

Cindy and Billy Smith dropped us off at our rig. We said our goodbyes till tomorrow.
We had salad with chicken on it after 8, we didn't eat dinner yet. So much going on, and we didn't even really start yet. But we had such a fun day.

Party Time with the Switch Crew

Party Time with the Switch Crew

Tuesday April 26, 2022

This morning after breakfast we took a ride and went to Gruene. Such a cute little town. They had such cute things to put in your flower beds, and garden.
 This sign says it all.
So many shops.
We walked around for a few hours. They had a hat store, candy store, antique shop, olive oil tasting, etc.
This was the entrance to a restaurant called Gristmill River Restaurant and Bar
General Store and Cotton Eye Joe 's Gruene Texas Mercantile
Bar above
We were in the  Gruene dance hall built in 1878, believed to be the oldest dance halls in state of Texas.
This is where George Strait and many other artists got their start . There was older pictures of famous people all on the inside , including John Travolta he made a movie here called Michael.

Some ladies asked me if I knew how to dance, while Jim was in the bathroom. I showed them the grapevine and few other steps. She asked Jim if he dances she asked us to dance,  she wanted to take our picture, we did a little two step for her. was fun and funny.

When we left we went to HEB for buns for tonight and went to Buc-ee's to get diesel.

When we got back into the CG we drove by these basically a 3 BR house you can rent here. Are huge.
The dovetail on this is amazing.
When we got back to the RV Jim got the smoker going. I heated up some egg roll in a bowl for lunch and made us turkey sandwiches. We got the pork roast on the smoker.
And we put on the switch crew Facebook page we were having pork barbecue sandwiches for anybody who is hungry in the crew. Slowly people started to arrive about 5 or 5:30. We got to meet a lot of people.
Todd and Sheila stopped by on their bikes. Harold and Cindy are here also from one strange Adventure. He was helping Todd try to find a leak under there fifth wheel, don't know where it's coming from. We said goodbye and we continued talking with our group until way after Dark. The last couple we really hit it off with or from Texas I have a 30 acre piece of property. Rhonda and Sean Coleman. They did the spreadsheet for the group they feel like they know everyone. They left just after 10 p.m. . Free Still have a lot of work left we will feed people that are coming in tomorrow.

Camp Fimfo Here We COME

Monday April 25, 2022

OK I jumped ahead, BUT
Our host have arrived. Right after us.
Switch It Up. With Todd and Sheila

He was up first, anxious to get moving. We got all packed up then pulled out just after 9:30. There is rain in the forecast,  we were hoping we would miss it. We drove for over 2 hours stopped at a quick rest area. Then the skies darkened, and the clouds opened up and it rained really heavy for just a few minutes. It stopped and started a few more times as we drove.
Getting really dark

We called Camp Fimfo to see if we can check in earlier then 3. She said sure no problem will charge you a $25 fee for early arrival. OH NO thanks,  Really, We were going to be no more than an hour early. So we saw a sign for Buc-ee's decided that would be our first stop to see one. Plus we were ready for bathroom and one of their great sandwiches for lunch.. And they are pretty great.
Below he was prepping pork I think it was. They also had brisket, sausage, and turkey.
Jim ate a tortilla wrapped sausage on a stick too. Bottom R
We walked around for a good hour the place is ginormous.
This place has EVERYTHING. Had a better housewares section then most department stores.
I love to read all the signs. I take the pic and read them later. Of course he was rushing me.
This whole long case was full of any kind of jerkey you could imagine.
This was a really cool barrel smoker.
This was the best picture of the camper I can get, it was pouring then we ran back out to the truck.

The campground is only 20 minutes away,  so we will be back. We arrived and checked in. She took the card I wanted to mail to my mother-in-law,  there was no mail box. And then I asked about the golf cart if we needed a special tag. They rent them here and she said NO we couldn't use our personal golf cart. ANOTHER STRIKE # 2 for Camp Fimfo.
We got backed into our site, luckily the rain had stopped by now. It cooled off over 20 degrees from when we left oh, I actually needed a coat. I first tryed to squeegee, but it was so dirty it didn't dry well,
then I took a hose and rinsed off the dirt from our dirty drive in the rain.
Later we went for a walk, then had our leftover spaghetti. So happy to finally be here.
WE MADE it
